Atiku-napeu
After having dreamed that he was a caribou, a man awoke one morning with antlers on his head and a white spot on his hind-quarters. After a certain time, he became the leader of a herd and turned upside down the way the caribou were hunted. He asked his fellow caribou to stay away from the hunters if it came to pass that they were hunting the caribou excessively. On becoming a master of the animals, Atiku-napeu, the Caribou Man, came in this way to rule over their destiny.

Mishtapush and the Bears
One day Mishtapush, a large hare who had lived in bygone days as a man, was following a bear trail. Coming across an old bear, he killed it, took his skin, and used it to cover himself. Thanks to his disguise, he was able to approach a family of black bears and later kill the bear cubs during the night. After eating the spoils of the hunt, Mishtapush fled into the mountains. The bears chased him, but had to stop their pursuit because the snow became too deep. They cried out to Mishtapush : “We wish you to be killed by someone smaller than yourself.” His fate was sealed when Mishtapush stumbled across a group of lynx and was killed by one of the cubs.
